Winnie the Pooh (2011)Cast: Jim Cummings, Craig Ferguson, John Cleese
Directed by: Stephen J. Anderson, Don Hall
Genre: Comedy, Family

In this revitalization of one of fairy tale’s most beloved characters, Winnie the Pooh is hungry for “hunny” yet again, and his quest to fill his belly sends him on a journey to hel Eyeore find his lost tail. All of the characters of the Thousand Acre Forest pull together in order to retrieve the appendage, all the while trying to capture the evil Backsoon, who has apparently kidnapped Christopher Robin.

Despite the numerous straight-to-video adventures, this is the first official attempt at creating a sequel to Disney’s adored classic. As such, there is little set-up given to character introductions, but I don’t think this is to the dismay of anyone. Children being introduced to these lovable characters for the first time will immediately be on board with their easy to understand characteristics, (not to mention they’re aptly named: Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, etc.).

Winnie the Pooh (2011)

Pooh’s adventures are nothing more than delightful excursions with charming personalities. While the film is incredibly short, it packs a ton of inventiveness into the fifty-eight concise minutes. The sight gags lovingly hark back to the Golden Age of Disney, giving the new Winnie the Pooh a vintage quality – and Pooh ages really well.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t pack the emotional wallop that other Disney classics have, (this is no doubt due to its lack of sentimentality – the only downfall of the film). Regardless, this is an incredibly charming, often very funny, and heartwarming movie that will certainly entertain the young ones and surprise the not-so-young ones. The world is a better place with Pooh around.

USA. 63 minutes. Rated G.
