Blue Hoodies in Independent Cinema
When you consider previous decades in cinema, no doubt the films are wrought with the fashion of the era. Some 80s films are almost unwatchable due to the New Wave hairdos. All 70s sci-fi films depict a future where sideburns never fell by the wayside. And the primary colors of the 90s… oh the primary colors of the 90s… But in the 2000s, we haven’t been separated enough to pinpoint what defines our fashion sense.
One thing, however, has become completely evident. You will find the definition of independent cinema within hooded sweatshirts. I’m not sure if it’s the comfort, the look, or the style, but they have most definitely become the go-to article of clothing for characters in emotional transition this decade.
Even above hooded sweatshirts in general, the image of a blue hoodie has become an ever present force. Close your eyes. Picture your favorite independent actors: Sam Rockwell, Ryan Gosling, Zooey Deschanel, Paul Giamatti, (enter whomever you wish)… super easy to picture them sporting a blue hoodie, right?
Maybe the theoretical meanings of the color blue have something to do with it. Whatever the case, it’s here to stay.
