Cast: Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher, Kevin Kline
Directed by: Ivan Reitman
Written by: Elizabeth Meriwether
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Since an awkward incident in summer camp, Adam (Kutcher) and Emma (Portman) have had intermittent contact with one another, each interaction more uncomfortable than the last. Finally, now that they are both adults trying to make their way in the world, they meet once again, and decide to become “sex friends”, that is, friends who have sex no strings attached (get it?) But naturally, feelings eventually develop and get in the way of their pact.
Legendary comedy director Ivan Reitman helms this rom-com that struggles to find its footing. For the most part everything is glossy and by the book, and the cast are all very charismatic in their own right, but there seems to be a problem with everything gelling. Kutcher and Portman are very charming actors, but the lack of chemistry kills any potential the film might have had. In a very presumptuous statement, this feels like Portman’s decision to do a “romantic comedy” next, and treats the role as such instead of really connecting with the material. Kutcher holds his own, but finds a greater connection with Lake Bell, who plays a supporting part – and when you’ve got a subplot that’s more believable than the main story… you’re in trouble.

No Strings Attached (2011) | Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher
No Strings Attached isn’t without its merits. Its pacing is brisk, and its lighthearted enough to make for an entertaining viewing. But Reitman’s sensibilities seem to be just a little out of touch, his style of comedy is just a bit out of date. In the hands of a younger director more in tune with the inner workings of modern relationships (and humor), this movie could have hit a few stronger notes.
The supporting cast provides most of the film’s most memorable moments. A delightful performance by Kevin Kline as Adam’s father is classic Kline comedy. Lake Bell (despite being cast as the ‘glasses = nerdy girl’ cliché) develops a compelling character out of a very stereotypical role, and though Emma has far too many friends in the film that could be rolled into one, Greta Gerwig and Mindy Kaling still manage to instill their charm.
The end result is a relatively harmless film that fans of the rom-com genre will occasionally revisit. Most audiences, however, will find it easy to walk away with no strings attached.
USA. 108 minutes. Rated R.
