Not to be confused with giant ants.
Home invasion films often start off rather scary, even terrifying, but then quickly hit the peak of their stride and lose steam by the end. But when your runtime is only 1 hour and 16 minutes, you don’t have much time to become redundant. Them is a film that uses this to its best abilities; you meet the characters, the events happen, it’s over. There is nothing extrenuous in the film, it’s either setting up its characters and situations or cashing in on what the audience has invested into it. It’s a highly effective thriller that relies more on terror than scares and gore. Them is very similar to The Strangers, though more concise and has a thought-provoking conclusion.
