Steven Soderbergh has built himself an interesting career of being unpredictable in his choices for films. There aren’t many directors who can tackle drug trafficking, three caper films with a massive list of A-list stars, a biopic about a feminist lawyer, a double biopic about a Argentinean revolutionary, a low-budget film about a prostitute, a science fiction drama, a black-and-white WWII noir, and a film about corporate embezzlement — all in one decade!  And The Informant! is up there with the best of Soderbergh’s films. It’s at once hilarious and harrowing as the layers get peeled back and we slowly realize what the story is really about. It was a brave choice to keep the audience in the dark to the character’s actions and motivations, but really makes for one hell of a turning point. Matt Damon takes another progressive step in showing his abilities as a versatile actor, who was dealt a very difficult role to play here having to be both hysterical, but allowing a whole other character live underneath what we could see. There are a lot of brilliant moments in this film that may or may not require second viewings for most people. I know I will definitely be one of those people.
