Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Starring: Will Ferrell, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson
Director: Marc Forster
Country: USA
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Little did he know, Harold Crick was in an awesome movie.
This high concept dramedy has Will Ferrell hearing his life being narrated to him. Almost as soon as the voice in his head starts, it tells relates that soon he is going to die. That’s all the set up that one needs to craft a film that can swing back and forth between comedy and drama with great ease. The casting of Ferrell in this role was a stroke of brilliance as he brings such humor to the overblown frustrations of this usually quiet man, as well as bringing a real sense of tenderness to the character’s softer side. The film is both literary and stylish, an odd mix, but one that works extremely well. Like or dislike Forsters films (Finding Neverland, Quantum of Solace) it’s hard to deny that they are incredibly well-made. It’s another great entry in the comedian taking a step toward serious work, in the same vein as Lost in Translation and Punch-Drunk Love.

I actually kinda love this movie. Gives Ferrell a challenge for once and Hoffman, as always is amazing. Great script, truly original. Even Maggie is bearable in this (barely). I’m sure if not for this, Last Chance Harvey would never have been cast that way.

Peter – This script is tremendous. One of the best of the decade, for sure. And Forster really highlights its best qualities. I don’t know that I even know anyone that doesn’t like this movie.

Love this movie myself. Such an underrated and under-seen little gem. Wish Will Ferrell would do more of those straight comedies instead of his usual slapstick

Castor – It’s quite brilliant. One of the best ensembles of the decade, for sure. Have you seen Winter Passing? It’s a little indie flick with Zooey Deschanel, Ed Harris and Will Ferrell. Not mind blowing, but another foray into more dramatic territory for Ferrell.

So glad this beat out Elf in the Comedy tournament, unfortunately it goes against Ferris Bueller this week.

Fitz – Yeah, it really doesn’t stand a chance in a ‘comedy’ tourny as it’s not particularly that funny – not in the way that the winner of a competition would be. But it is awesome and far superior to Elf.
