The reputation that preceded Monsoon Wedding was a bit daunting. It being on a number of ‘best of’ and ‘must see’ lists, with other sweeping dramas, I fully expected to either be bored to death or emotionally exhausted by the end of it. But I was very pleasantly surprised to find a rather humorous and light-hearted drama that had some traces of very heavy issues. At no point does the film get bogged down by dwelling on these things, but each one arises in its own due course and is woven through the family ties of the wedding that is taking place. It’s a character drama about falling in love, finding love, losing love, losing innocence, sacrifice, and doing what is right. It hits an uplifting stride early on and sticks with it allowing for the audience to get familiar with its long list of characters and attach themselves to the emotional journey of each no matter how big or small.
