Wasn’t everyone’s high school years a detective story?

In my research of studying films from the 2000s for so long, I’ve grown malnourished in one of my favorite genres (or ‘styles’, if you want to be anal about it,) Film Noir. Brick has not only whet my appetite, it quenched my thirst. Taking the themes and style of the pulp stories of which Film Noir is based on, it applies it to a story of local drug crime in a high school and doesn’t ignore the slightest detail from the femme fatal to the sharp as shark’s teeth dialogue. It could be regarded as a preposterous concept, but it’s handled with the utmost attention to authenticity while maintaining an immense level of entertainment. Rian Johnson should be celebrated for such a unique and accomplished debut.
