Spirited Away (2002)
Starring: (voices by:) Rumi Hîragi, Miyu Irino, Mari Natsuki
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Country: Japan
Genre: Foreign, Animation, Fantasy
Best creation of wonder and cute cuddly characters of the decade.
It could be argued that Hayao Miyazaki is the most masterful modern myth teller. His ability to transport audiences of all ages, races and creeds to magical places is undeniable and awe-inspiring. Spirited Away is probably his masterpiece, a film that captures the joy of the imagination and scariness of being a kid. His stories are filled with wonder and spectacle but never at the sacrifice of story. Spirited Away is the story of a young child who, for lack of a better term, goes down the rabbit hole and loses her name and her journey to retrieve it from an evil witch. The film creates an unforgettable world which rivals the best of children’s films from the past and characters that kids will be requesting all of those crazy plushies for yeas to come.

My favorite film of all time. I saw this movie under all the right circumstances – I was a little(r) kid, and knew nothing about it nor Miyazaki…needless to say I was blown away. I don’t think I’ve ever felt such magic and power in cinema after my first viewing of this movie.

Ha, well you’ve read the story of how I came to appreciate this film. Why they are waiting so long to bring it to Bluray I’ll never know, but man I can’t wait to relive the magic again.
