Many well-established filmmakers recall seeing films like Bridge on the River Kwai or Lawrence of Arabia on the big screen as a life changing moment that redefined what could be done with cinema. There Will Be Blood was that film for me. I was, and still am, confounded that such a expansive story is even possible to tell in the allotted duration of a film. But here it is, both as original and highly influenced (Greenwood’s score is right out of a Kubrick film,) suspenseful in its charging momentum, gut-wrenching in its portrayal of greed, and awe-inspiring in its performances, (I thought Daniel Day Lewis was astonishing as Bill “The Butcher” in Gangs of New York; this performance blows it out of the water.) I don’t think there is likely to be another film of its calibre for a long, long while. It’s sprawling, it’s epic, it’s unforgettable.
