One Hour Photo (2002)

Starring: Robin Williams, Michael Vartan, Connie Neilsen
Director: Mark Romanek
Country: USA
Genre: Thriller

These days Robin Williams can come off kind of creepy as is, but when he tries? Whoo-boy, look out. This generally overlooked and almost forgotten thriller is the debut (and to the date of this writing, only) feature of infamous music video director Mark Romanek. His direction is so restrained, with Kubrickian emphasis on mechanical camera movements, it establishes a perturbing mood from the get-go. As the film slowly wears on, we ease into the deranged mind of the one-hour-photo employee while he quietly stalks a decent family. If the digital age has dashed all fears of having your photos seen and developed by strangers, the thought of this creepy dude leering at the 1,000+ photos tagged of you on Facebook isn’t far off. This film had a huge effect on me when I first saw it, and in the few times I’ve allowed myself to watch it since, it’s remained efficacious.
